moment’s rest

can we just sit and rest
here for a moment?
all night long we have walked
and now, the sun burns
down on an old, tired man.

look at the shade by
that tree over yonder.
could we not
find a moment’s rest
beneath her lovely boughs?

ah, please, yes. let’s
sit beneath the heavy
summer leaves and crunch
the cool green grasses
beneath our boots.

you know this awful sun has
beat the last drop of
sweat from our brows, sapped
all the seas within, cough
cough, we can barely breathe.

and the night was so cold,
so long, so strange. all we’ve
seen, couldn’t we but stop
and rest for just a moment?
please, just a moment

for an old, tired man.
