A moment on the lawn

the st augustine is hardy
and thick this year. thanks
to a mild and rainy summer

and long spring. the blades
are straight and sharp to
the touch and the green

is so complex that it saunters
between multiple shades of
blue, depending on the type

of shadow being cast across
it: cloud, tree, person. it meets
the ole mutt bermuda and crab

and onion and a few other scrub
grasses in a near perfect line
across the pasture. their

colors pale and lie lifeless, a
cadaver-ish stain against
an otherwise holy hue of Mother

Earth’s veins and blood and bones.
her skin makes a fine bed
as the mopey sun lowers

invisibly into the obscure. i
rest my head on her bosom
and watch him sink and

sink, as each molten layer is
peeled away and cast off into
the Great Beseeching Abyss.
