avoiding a july Blizzard

the reception was warm
the sidewalks were hot
steamy mud sweat rises from

the over baked Bermuda
trees buckle underneath
the weight of UV

rays and children’s swings
and kaleidoscopes are
stingy with reds and oranges

and yellows, with no place
for the greens and blues
of cooler days. it all

swelters, save you,
a cold brick of frigid skin.
an icy heart and a

frozen exterior of cold
condensation. droplets
condescend like words

reserved for a day
warm enough to disguise
the spite you hold inside.

today, just after the fireworks
of Independence Day, Hell’s forecast
calls for snow. lots of snow.

Lucifer is bundled up in sheepskin
and his minions hover over crackling
fires built in back-alley trash cans.
