subterranean Swim.

today i’m going to plunge
into that deep dark ocean
underneath me. i will kick
and claw and dig through
dirt and rock and mud
until i break through into
the sky beneath the ground
and fall headfirst through
that inner atmosphere
until i splash and dive deep
into the cold, murky
ocean below.
in those waters, the dark
becomes light and the
abyss glows beneath
my flailing feet.
above me, only black.
it’s solitude i am seeking.
and a cool midnight swim.
no one knows of this place
and i come often, but never
stay too long. the swimming
is great, but i miss the stars.

  1. When I was in college in southern Illinosis, folks would go swimming late at night in the many lakes and ponds in the area….now since I don’t swim… I can only say from a shore person’s perspective…it looked a lot like your poem….really enjoyed reading this one.

Again, a lovely poem within the poem…
